Harvey Heroes

In the fall of 2017, Southeast Texas got hit by a very devastating and damaging natural disaster. Most of you probably know this by its name Hurricane Harvey. I tried to help people and places in need as much as I could. This was a time in which we needed to come together as a community and help each other out. I was very busy with volunteering in this time period and ended up with a total of 40 or more hours of volunteer work. I volunteered a lot at the Southeast Texas Food Bank, which is right across from Lamar University so it was easy for me to just walk there whenever I was free. I also went to a house to help the residents clean up the mess the hurricane had caused. In addition, I volunteered at a women’s shelter in Beaumont where I organized and sorted items and boxes. This experience was worth every single minute and I am very glad I got to help out during this time.

Here is a picture of my friend sorting supplies at School Tools, as well as sorting foods in the main room of the Food Bank.

At the food bank, I sorted out different foods and essentials for distribution and donation for people in need. The people in need were victims of Hurricane Harvey, as well as others who needed help. I had a good time here and made some new friends as well during the process. Also, I volunteered in the School Tools section of the food bank. Here, I helped teachers pack different supplies for their students, as well as helped sort out the different school items. I had a really fun time here because the women in charge of School Tools was very sweet and funny. My volunteer experience here was very memorable and enjoyable!

2. Women’s Shelter- Family Service

September 21st, 2017 from 3 pm to 4:30 pm

At the Women’s Shelter in Beaumont, I mainly helped sort out and organize various donations from across the area. I opened up and emptied boxes and placed the various items in the places they belonged. All of the donations contributed towards someone’s needs whether they were victims of Hurricane Harvey or just people in need. My time here was nice since I love organizing and sorting.

3. Helping at a house

September 7th, 2017 from 3 pm to 5:30 pm

On this day, my friend and I volunteered to help out a family at their house which was almost completely destroyed by the hurricane. The family lost a lot of their belongings, however they were all okay which is most important. I helped broom and rake different areas of their house, as well as just clean up a little. In addition, I pulled out nails from the walls since they were remodeling their house and needed the walls to be bare. It was sad seeing this family go through such a rough time but day by day their household became better and towards renewal. I am glad I could help them out and be apart of their experience as they picked themselves back up after a rough time.

4. Dogtober Fest

October 16, 2017 from 8 am to 2:30 pm

Here are some photos from online which show the walking area of dog show and a cute little doggie dressed up.

The Dogtober Fest is basically a festival for different types of dogs. This was so fun to go to because there were dogs everywhere and we got to play with them, as well as watch them take part in a dog show. These dogs were dressed up in different costumes and uniforms which made them look even cuter! Here, my friend and I were given our own booth which was a massage booth for the dogs. We got to massage some dogs and tickle them which was so much fun. I love dogs and other furry and fluffy animals! Most of these dogs were up for adoption due to being  disowned, lost, or hurt during the hurricane and other times. Some of them were adopted on this day which was awesome since now they will have a new home. I am glad I got to help out in this event and make sure the cute animals had a fun time at the festival.

Below are two pictures- one is of my log sheet of my hours as a part of Harvey heroes and the other is my certificate of completing the 40 hours in the fall of 2017.
